Late Night Library

Meg Wolitzer – Belzhar

Late Night Love Affair, hosted by Sarah Marshall and Candace Opper

This month Sarah and Candace discuss Meg Wolitzer’s Belzhar—the first young adult novel featured on this podcast (not counting The Outsiders, which we believe has graduated from YA to “classic”). Topics of discussion include (but are not limited to): conniption fits, Gus Van Sant’s To Die For, what it means to be the chosen one, Adaptation, not knowing how The Hunger Games works, 13 going on 30 vs Big, tampons full of vodka, the ways 60 Minutes attempts to decipher teenagers, accessing the Sylvia Plath estate, the outlawing of Romeo and Juliet, and burying hotdogs in the sand.

When we’re teenagers we’re just completely timeless. I think a teenager in Mesopotamia would have the same thoughts and desires and value system.

Candace Opper and Sarah Marshall met in the MFA creative writing program at Portland State. They share a love of slasher films, George C. Scott, conspiracy theory, Stephen King, VCRs, air-popped popcorn, Jurassic Park, and discussing over coffee their obsessions with suicide and serial killers, respectively.
