I think that drama – story – are about depicting desire, they’re about humanity and life, which is all about one thing – like right now I want more coffee. We always want something. But when I started writing my book, I guess I started in one way thinking I was writing a story about somebody who wanted to not have faith, if that makes sense. But in the end I realized, oh, I’m not writing that, I’m writing a story about someone who came from faith and wanted to understand why they didn’t have it anymore. It’s a subtle difference but it is a difference.

SCOTT CHESHIRE received his MFA from Hunter College, and teaches writing for The Sackett Street Writers’ Workshop. He is the author of High as the Horses’ Bridles, his first novel. He lives in New York City.
